The Importance of SLAP Conferences and the Importance of an Interconnected Iberoamerican Polymer Community, today

Carmen Mijangos is an “ad honorem” Professor at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (CSIC), Academician of the Basque Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters and Vice President of the Specialized Group of Polymers (GEP). She has developed an intense research career with long stays in different institutions and countries: Basque Country (University and POLYMAT), Catalonia (Polytechnic University, Lyon (CNRS), Strasbourg (CNRS) and Canada (U. Toronto), in the field of Polymers, in particular, on polymer modification reactions; polymer gels and, more recently, polymer under confinement. Her work has been collected in near 300 publications and book chapters. She has achieved a total of 62 national and EU projects and 14 contracts with multinational companies, in addition to 5 patents. She has trained 16 Doctors and 45 postdoc and Ms polymer specialists from different Spanish, European and American countries and given more than 100 invited conferences and seminars in Europe, Asia and America. She has been President of 5 international Conferences, among them, of SLAP2022
She has combined research with management positions: Director of the ICTP-CSIC; Coordinator of the Materials Science and Technology Area of the CSIC and Manager of the National Materials Program of Science Ministry. Member of many national and international Scientific Advisory Committee and Member of the First and Second Ethics Committee of the CSIC. Among the awards and honors: She has been elected as Reference Scientist and Innovator at the Ministry of Science; named Illustrious Bilbaína, by the Bilbao City Council, recognizing her as “International Scientist”; she has received the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) Award for a Distinguished Career and others.
